Safe Environment

Safe Environment

The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton is committed to providing safe pastoral environments for children, youth, vulnerable adults, parishioners, clergy, staff, volunteers, and all those we serve.

Safe Environment is part of our responsibility as a Church. It protects those who are vulnerable, supports those who serve in ministry, and helps our parishes remain places of trust, prayer, accountability, and care.

"Spread your protection over them, so that those who love your name may exult in you."

Psalm 5:11

Learn More About Safe Environment

Safe Environment includes clear standards for ministry, screening and training requirements, and a responsible process for reporting and responding to abuse. Choose the topic below that best matches what you need.

Responsible Ministry

Responsible ministry means serving in the Church with clear boundaries, proper training, and care for the dignity and safety of every person. The Eparchy's Safe Environment policy applies to clergy, religious, seminarians, employees, parish leaders, volunteers, and lay ministers who serve in parish and eparchial life.

This section helps explain

  • Safe pastoral relationships
  • Standards of conduct
  • Privacy and boundaries
  • Accountability in ministry
  • How concerns are reported

Screening and Training

Screening and training help parishes create safe, respectful, and accountable ministry settings. Requirements depend on the role and level of responsibility, especially when ministry involves children, youth, seniors, vulnerable adults, finances, keys, or access to Church property.

This section helps explain

  • Who needs screening and training
  • General-risk and high-risk ministry
  • Required forms and checks
  • Parish recordkeeping responsibilities
  • How volunteers and staff are supported

Reporting and Responding to Abuse

The Eparchy receives reports of abuse, misconduct, bullying, harassment, and unsafe behaviour with seriousness, compassion, and accountability. Reporting to the Church does not replace reporting to civil authorities when a person is in danger or when the law requires it.

This section helps explain

  • How to report abuse or misconduct
  • When to contact civil authorities
  • What happens after a report is made
  • Care and healing for those affected
  • The role of advisory and care committees
