A Spiritual Home for Ukrainian Catholics Across Alberta

The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton is a Byzantine Catholic community rooted in Ukrainian faith, prayer, and tradition. Through our parishes, priests, ministries, and pastoral care, we help God's people know God, love God, and serve God.

Whether your family has worshipped here for generations or you are discovering our tradition for the first time, you are welcome here.

What Is an Eparchy?

An Eparchy is a local Church in the Eastern Catholic tradition. It is led by a Bishop and lived through its parishes, priests, deacons, religious communities, families, ministries, and faithful.

For the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, this means caring for Ukrainian Catholic parish life across Alberta. The Eparchy supports the faithful through the Divine Liturgy, the sacraments, prayer, catechism, pastoral care, charitable service, and the passing on of our Ukrainian spiritual heritage.

An Eparchy is not only an administrative body or pastoral centre. It is a community of faith gathered around Christ, shepherded by the Bishop, and made visible in parish life.

Stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught.

Our Faith and Tradition

We belong to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church in communion with the wider Catholic Church. Our faith is Catholic, and our worship, theology, prayer, music, calendar, and sacred art are shaped by the Byzantine tradition.

At the heart of our life is the Divine Liturgy. Through chant, icons, incense, Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Eucharist, we enter the mystery of Christ and are formed as His people.

Our tradition is ancient, but it is not only historical. We receive the faith, live it in the present, and pass it on to future generations through families, parishes, feast days, fasting seasons, sacraments, service, and daily prayer.

Part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton is part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with Rome. Our faith is Catholic, our worship is Byzantine, and our spiritual heritage is deeply rooted in the Ukrainian Christian tradition.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of Kyiv-Halych and Father and Head of the UGCC.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav Yuriyovych Shevchuk was born on May 5, 1970. He was elected Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church by the Synod of Bishops in March 2011, and Pope Benedict XVI blessed this choice on March 25, 2011.

In Canada, Ukrainian Greek Catholic communities are served through the Metropolitanate of Winnipeg. The Metropolitanate includes the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg and the eparchies of Saskatoon, Edmonton, New Westminster, and Toronto.

Traditions and Sacramental Life

Many visitors come to our site with sincere questions: What is the Divine Liturgy? How are Ukrainian Catholics different from Roman Catholics or Orthodox Christians? Can I attend if I am not Ukrainian? What sacraments are celebrated here? The short answer is this: Ukrainian Catholics are fully Catholic and live the faith through the Byzantine tradition.

The Divine Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy is the central prayer of our Church. It is where we hear the Word of God, offer praise and thanksgiving, and receive the Holy Eucharist. It is not a performance or a lecture. It is the prayer of the whole Church.

The Sacraments

We celebrate the sacraments through the Byzantine tradition: Baptism, Chrismation, the Holy Eucharist, Confession, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick. These are not separate from parish life; they are how Christ heals, strengthens, and gathers His people.

Prayer, Fasting, and Feast Days

Our spiritual life follows the rhythm of the Church year. Feast days, fasting seasons, daily prayer, and family traditions help us carry faith into ordinary life.

Icons and Sacred Beauty

Icons are not decoration. They are windows into heaven, teaching the faith through sacred beauty and drawing us toward Christ, the Mother of God, and the saints. We venerate icons because they depict Christ and His holy people; our worship belongs to God alone.

Ukrainian Spiritual Heritage

Language, chant, customs, food, family memory, and parish life all carry the faith from one generation to the next. We honour this heritage while welcoming those who are new to it. Our mission is simple and deep: to journey with God's people in their coming to know God, to love God, and to serve God. We live this mission through worship, sacraments, prayer, formation, and service.

Rooted in Faith, Across Generations

Ukrainian Catholic life in Alberta was built by families who carried their faith, language, songs, prayers, and traditions into a new land. They built parishes, welcomed priests, formed communities, and kept the Divine Liturgy at the centre of their lives.

That story continues today. The Eparchy serves lifelong parishioners, recent Ukrainian newcomers, families raising children in faith, young adults, seniors, clergy, religious communities, donors, volunteers, and people searching for a spiritual home.

Some come looking for Divine Liturgy times. Some are preparing for Baptism, Marriage, or Confession. Some want their children to grow in Ukrainian Catholic faith and culture. Some are newly arrived from Ukraine and need a community that understands their language, grief, hope, and courage.

Our history is not only something we remember. It is something we receive, protect, and pass on. Wherever you are beginning, the parish is the first place to start. There, faith becomes personal: through prayer, friendship, service, and the life of the Church.
