About Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Athabasca serves the Ukrainian Catholic presence in the town of Athabasca, about 136 km north of Edmonton. Its beginnings trace to the early 1950s, when local faithful and surrounding parishes helped purchase property for a church in town.

The parish later chose to build a new church, with the cornerstone blessed in 1964 and the completed church blessed by Bishop Neil Savaryn in 1967. Its history remembers the founders and clergy who helped establish a lasting Ukrainian Catholic home in Athabasca.
