Epistle

Acts 10:44-11:10

In those days, while Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I replied, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But a second time the voice answered from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane.’ This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven.”

The Lord said to the Jews that came to him, “I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Is that what he means by saying, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.” They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all? I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

O Lord, even though the holy Jeremiah was cast into a cesspool,* yet he noetically acquired a beautiful sweet fragrance,* for he dwells in the mansions of paradise.* By his supplications preserve us all, in that You are our Benefactor.

From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

O Lord, the prophet, shining with Your all-radiant beams,* was seen even by his opponents to be blessed and honourable;* for the adversary was put to shame by his virtues;* and he foresaw the things of the future* as though they were present ascents.

Blessed Father Clement!* From your youth you loved God,* by your life you taught the people the faith of Christ.* By adorning the monastery of Univ you beautified your soul with virtues* and received the crown prepared for you because of your struggles, O blessed one.

Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Blessed Father Clement!* By your pure life you shone forth as a model* of the God-given rule that leads to salvation* and laid low the legions of demons.* Therefore, deliver us today from the fog of sin, O blessed one.

Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

O light placed on high, blessed archimandrite Clement,* you illumined all with the word of Christ,* granting salvation to those who thirst,* revealing the Light of Christ to those caught in darkness and held fast by anger.* The impious sought to destroy you,* but by giving up your life for Christ,* your light ascended to the heights of heaven,* illumining the way of salvation for our souls.

Having come together at the Mid-feast* between Your Resurrection and the divine coming of Your Holy Spirit, O Christ,* we praise the mysteries of Your wonders.* Therefore, on this day send down Your great mercy to us.

The all-holy mid-feast of the Saviour’s Resurrection* has now appeared like the brightness of noon,* shining upon the world with the divine grace of Christ’s arising,* flashing forth with unerring signs of incorruption* revealing His Ascension into the heights.* The most bright feast of Pentecost is manifestly radiant* with the Holy Spirit’s descent to us.* Therefore it bestows upon our souls peace and great mercy.

I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us.

Having reached the feast of Mid-Pentecost,* the Lord now imparts the streams of His great compassion,* like a Divine River of Glory, crying aloud to all:* “You that are thirsty, come to Me and draw forth abundantly.* For I am a well-spring of empathy and an abyss of mercy,* pouring forth forgiveness upon the world,* purging sins, and expunging maladies.”* And He saves them that keep the memorial of His Resurrection,* and protects them that honour and with love celebrate His Ascension in glory,* granting to our souls peace and great mercy.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud.

Having stood within the temple’s court,* He who is the uncircumscribable God and Lord,* who by nature is God,* and for our sake became incarnate, and circumscribed in the flesh* poured forth for all mankind vivifying teachings,* saying: Be purified in your souls;* Quench the burning heat of the passions.* Let no one be deprived of this draught,* for upon him that drinks I bestow the divine grace* of an immortal and better heavenly Kingdom,* which he shall share with Me, the Creator,* and thus be glorified.

The joyous spring time of the Pascha of the Lord has dawned on us today!* Let us rejoice and draw from the fruits of its harvest:* life, incorruption, and immortality.* Come, O you faithful,* and let us also celebrate the annual memory of the hieromartyr Clement!* He shone forth with an abundant harvest of virtues:* riches through poverty,* a noble spirit through humility,* victorious strength through weakness and suffering,* and, following after Christ,* he passes from death to life.
